About Me
Cory Furman, K.C., C.Dir.
I am a registered Canadian patent and trademark agent and the founder of Furman IP Law & Strategy PC in Regina, Saskatchewan. My practice focuses on patent and trademark prosecution, industrial design, copyright, and IP strategy for Canadian businesses of all sizes.
Over the course of 30 years of practice, I have had the privilege of working with a broad spectrum of clients — from individual inventors through to multinational corporations — across a wide range of industries and technical fields. That breadth of experience gives me a perspective on IP that goes well beyond the mechanics of prosecution. I understand how IP fits into a business, and I give advice accordingly.
I am a registered agent before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. My prosecution experience spans patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs in many technical fields. My litigation track record includes serving as part of the counsel team in the seminal case of Dutch Industries v. Commissioner of Patents, a case in which the applicant was successful at first instance in overturning a patent on the basis of entity status — a result that led to the realignment of the entire entity status regime in Canadian patent law.
I am a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the International Trademark Association (INTA), which I joined in 1997. I have served in numerous committee and leadership roles within INTA over the years. I have been recognized in the peer-reviewed Best Lawyers in Canada (Trademarks) and Who’s Who Legal — Canada: Trademarks Law directories for a number of consecutive years. I hold the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) designation from the Directors College at McMaster University.
I believe that giving sound business-centric IP advice requires genuine engagement with the business community — and I have acted in board and governance capacities with a number of organizations in our community, including the Regina Airport Authority, Creative Saskatchewan (Chair), the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce (Chair), Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (Vice-Chair), SaskArts / Saskatchewan Arts Board (Chair), and eHealth Saskatchewan.
My approach is direct. Clients need advice that helps them make decisions. I will tell you what I think, explain the basis for it, and give you the options.
